Discussion of the Polymita spp.

The Polymita is widespread throughout Oriente Province at the
easternmost part of the Island of Cuba, There are no Polymita
found on Isla de Pinos (the largest offshore key / island south of
Cuba) or any of the smaller adjacent offshore keys.

The following is a synopsis of information on these arboreal molluscs;
type locality, holotype or paratype depository and publication of
description. The photo pages will discuss them in groups in the
order shown on the main listing.

Polymita picta picta (Born 1780) -
Type locality: Torre has selected Jauco and vicinity, on the south coast
near Baracoa, Oriente Province, Cuba as the type locality. This being the
only region where specimens of P. picta picta have been found.
Holotype: As described - fig 17, plate 15.
Description: Born 1780, Mus. Test. Caes. Vind., p. 386, plate 15, fig 17,
(Helix picta).

Polymita picta picta var. muscata Torre1950 -
Type locality: Near Jauco, south coast of Province of Oriente, Cuba.
Holotype: de la Torre collection, whereabouts ??

Polymita picta picta var. multifasciata Torre1950 -
Type locality: Near Playa Blanca, south coast of Province of Oriente, Cuba.
