Discussion of the Polymita sp.

The Polymita is widespread throughout Oriente Province at the
easternmost part of the Island of Cuba, There are no Polymita
found on Isla de Pinos (the largest offshore key / island south of
Cuba) or any of the smaller adjacent offshore keys.

The following is a synopsis of information on these arboreal molluscs;
type locality, holotype or paratype depository and publication of
description. The photo pages will discuss them in groups in the
order shown on the main listing.

Polymita sulphurosa sulphurosa (Morelet 1849)-
Type locality: Near Gibara, North Coast,
Province of Oriente, Cuba. Torre re-designated the locality as coastal
area or small islets off the north coast near Sagua de Tanamo.
Holotype: London Museum, specimen/lot No. ??
Description:Morelet 1849, "Testacea Novissima Insulae Cubana et
Americae Centralis", I, (Helix sulphurosa), pg. 8.
Note: Torre examined the holotype and paratypes at the British Museum
of Natural History and noted that all the specimens were "sulfur yellow"
without traces of flammules or sutural colors.
